Why Has Dhruv Jurel Replaced Rishabh Pant as Wicketkeeper in IND vs NZ 2024 1st Test?

Team India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was forced to leave the field during Day 2 of the first Test against New Zealand due to a painful knee injury. The injury occurred when a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja struck Pant on the right knee, an area not protected by his pads. Dhruv Jurel, the backup wicketkeeper, promptly took over the wicketkeeping duties in Pant’s absence.

The incident unfolded on the final ball of the 37th over when New Zealand’s left-handed opener Devon Conway missed a sharply turning delivery from Jadeja. The ball narrowly missed the stumps and Pant’s gloves, hitting him directly on the knee. Pant immediately collapsed in pain, and though the medical team quickly arrived with a pain-relieving spray, the injury seemed serious enough to prevent him from continuing.

Pant, clearly uncomfortable, had to leave the field alongside the medical staff after attempting to walk but hobbling awkwardly. Dhruv Jurel was summoned from the dressing room and took his place behind the stumps, while Pant remained seated by the boundary, receiving further treatment.

Dhruv Jurel Steps Up as Wicketkeeper

Jurel, who had impressed earlier in the year during the home series against England, showcased his reliability with the gloves once again. He was quick to step into the role, although he nearly had a nervous moment when he almost dislodged the bails prematurely as Ravichandran Ashwin bowled Conway in the 40th over.

Jurel’s swift adaptability is a testament to his skills and preparedness as a backup wicketkeeper. His presence provided stability behind the stumps, despite the sudden nature of the substitution.

Rishabh Pant’s Contribution in India’s First Innings

Prior to his injury, Rishabh Pant had managed to score 20 runs in India’s first innings. His 20 off 49 deliveries made him one of only two Indian players to reach double figures in what turned out to be a disastrous batting performance for the hosts. India was bowled out for a mere 46 runs, their lowest total in a home Test.

Pant, who was promoted to bat at No. 4 due to India’s early collapse, tried to counterattack the moving ball. However, his efforts were short-lived, as he managed to score just two boundaries before being dismissed.

Pant’s injury has raised concerns about his availability for the remainder of the match and potentially the series, while Dhruv Jurel’s performance in his absence will be under close scrutiny.
